I'm working on this page:

http://198.106.206.166/gbs-matte-eyeshadow.html

When I select an option ("Click here to select") my table of options shows with the swatches. This works fine in FF and IE.

However, when I actually click one of the options, I'm using innerHTML to re-write the main table content. It works great in FF, but gives me an error in IE7.

I've read that this is usually caused by two issues: 1) nested form tags, which I don't have and 2) improper HTML that's being writting using the innerHTML, which I think I've checked a few times.

Anyone see what I'm missing here?

Thanks

Julian Outside the Knitting Factory by joe holmes

Runtime Error 216 is a very common error and it will normally be experienced when your computer attempts to load Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01. This problem should only affect computers running windows 98 or Me.

If your computer is suffering from runtime 216 error then the problem is probably caused by being infected with a virus such as the SubSeven Trojan virus.  Hi I tried to add a favicon to a website running DotNetNuke.  I did it by uploading my .ico file and then renaming the old favicon.ico to favicon1.ico.  Then I changed mine ot favicon.ico.  After doing this the website stopped working and it gives this error on every page.

Troubleshooting Common Outlook Error

Outlook by msc-ρңσtσđєѕіgη

Although I prefer to use Google's Gmail and POP3 access to it, I have several friends who seem to want to use Outlook Express since it comes with Windows XP.

If you use Outlook Express to send and receive your email, then you probably have messages stored on your PC that you don't want to lose. If you want to save and preserve that data, then this article is for you. With a few easy steps, I will guide you through the process of preserving all archived mail and storing it for later retrieval.

Understanding the layout and process.

All messages for Outlook Express are stored in their own directory, and have several files which indicate each folder present that you are using in Outlook Express. There are 5 basic directories that are common: Outbox, Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts, and Deleted Items. If you create any subfolders under Outlook Express in addition to those, you'll see those present as files and directories whenever you look for them. If you create additional folders under any areas like the inbox for example, you will see them show up on the directory listing of Outlook Express folders, along with files linked to those directories. When we are ready to make a backup of the mail folders for Outlook Express, we will need to make sure that we create a backup of ALL the files stored under a mail folder.

The files which hold your email messages and data are called DBX files (they end with a .dbx extension). They are what Outlook Express reads to create your email box as it appears when you run the program. To preserve your email, we will copy these dbx files from where they are to another folder (a new, empty folder on the desktop for example). Once copied, you can import them to another computer from a flash drive or burn them to a CD and copy them back to a new computer to verify that they have been exported and retrieved correctly.

Backing up the files:

Run Outlook Express, click on Tools in the menu bar, and then click on Options.

Another box titled "Options" will appear on the screen. On this box there will be different tabs. One of these tabs will say "Maintenance" on it. Click the tab that says "Maintenance", and the contents of the box will change to reflect the maintenance menu.

On the maintenance area, you will see a button that says "Store Folder". Click on the "Store Folder" button.

A smaller box that says "Store Location" will appear. On this box there is text that says:

"Your personal message store is located in the following folder:"

Just below that text is a box with a unique file path to where your emails are stored with Outlook Express on your computer.

Highlight all of the text in that box, right-click the mouse while it is highlighted, and on the menu that appears select the COPY option (do NOT select cut! Just copy!). You can now click the "x" to close the "Store Location" box.

You now have the directory path stored to the clipboard. Click your START button. Launch the "Run" command, and on the box that appears, place the cursor onto the text box area, right-click your mouse, and select "Paste". When the directory path we copied is pasted to the text area successfully, press the OK button. A Windows Explorer box will launch to the directory where your email files are stored for Outlook Express, and you should now be able to see all the files for them. You should see a .dbx file for each folder that you have in Outlook Express.

Now, all you need to do is highlight all of these files, right-click your mouse, and select COPY (do NOT select cut!!). Go to the new folder we created on the desktop, double click on it, and then PASTE a copy of the files there. Presto. You have officially copied your Outlook Express mail folders, and can burn this new folder with all your email copied to it to a CD, DVD, or save to a usb flash disk. You can use them to import back all your emails and folders at a later date if you ever need to reinstall Outlook Express, or switch to a new computer.

To import your saved data to another computer that has Outlook Express, just start Outlook Express on that computer, insert the CD or flash drive that you saved your dbx files to, and on the top menu where it says "File", select File, and then select the menu option that says "Import". You will be asked where you want to import from. Tell it to grab the files it needs from the CD, flash drive, or other location where you saved it to, and it will restore them exactly as they were on your other computer just before the backup was made.

Congratulations! You've successfully backed up your email!

Windows XP Slow to Boot Up - we essential Effective Methods to Make information technology Faster!

Acer Aspire One con Windows 7 by Taller Hikari

Are applications on your computer crashing for no particular reason? When booting up, is it taking a long time for your system to start? Are you getting strange error registry windows messages letting you know that some files are missing? These are issues that can occur anytime with a pc. If you have had enough of these reoccurring problems, then it is time for you to find the cause and to go about working out a solution.

These errors are common and can be because of a number of reasons. Overtime, the efficiency of the personal computer can deteriorate. Most of the issues come from the registry, which is a database that stores all the information needed by programs on your hard drive including setting and profiles, amongst other things. The registry is a highly complex system and is one of the most important parts of the windows operating system. If the information in here is not correct, or is corrupted, then it can cause all sorts of problems for your system.

Over a period of time errors start to occur in the registry. Uninstalled programs may have left obsolete files behind. Left unattended, these redundant files can cause conflicts which need to be repaired, or removed, so that the registry can work more efficiently, and in turn so will your computer.

There are a couple of ways of fixing a error registry window. Either manually by going into the registry, finding the problem and then repairing it. This is a job that should only be done by someone that is familiar with the registry as it is possible to easily make a mistake and that can result in making things much worse. Alternatively, you can choose to use a program that cleans and repairs the registry for you. A lot of IT professionals prefer to use a cleaner as it is the quickest and easiest way of addressing problems. It will scan your system for you, and within minutes will offer you a solution. It will also backup you data so that, should something go wrong after the repair, you can restore back to how it was before you started doing the fix.

You can download a cleaner like this from the Internet. These tools are readily available everywhere. Just make sure that you are getting it from a reliable source, as sometimes a cleaner can contain a virus that may end up doing more harm than good. Often this happens when an unsuspecting user chooses to get a cleaner from a less-than relaible source, and all sorts of issues can happen.

It also needs to have all the features needed to fix your error registry window, which means that your computer will once again be working like it did when you first bought it.

Your precious computer and the data it holds is a lot more valuable than people think. That is why it is important to ensure that the health of your personal computer is looked at on a regular basis.

Sorry that I can not be more specific at this time.” – We can only wait right now.

    • KaiRo found out that the contact at Google changed. Also, discussing a possible open Geolocation service.

Only unresolved items are tracked here – and we should find a way to deal with it for every item talked about in this section!

  • Need progress on the following issues, who is on it or can do it?

    • bug 463903 (form autocomplete documentation).

      • Firefox has http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Form+autocomplete?bl=n&s=autocomplete. mcsmurf will post this link to the bug.

    • bug 525601 (Cut&paste w/ McAfee Site Advisor).

      • Waiting for more people to report if the latest McAfee SA has fixed the C&P D&D problem. We may still want to take Neil’s patch though.

    • bug 539194 MailNews high CPU (bug 311774 regression).

SeaMonkey 2.0.3

open blockers (3)

blocker requests (2)

fixed (69)

  • Planned release for 16 February, based on Gecko 1.9.1.8.

  • Of the two blockers assigned to mcsmurf, one is waiting for review and the other should finally see some progress again as the try server did not like the previous few patches (try server problem).

Feature List, Planning

Bug statistics for last two (full) weeks: 43 new, 15 fixed, 11 triaged.

  • What’s up there?

Major wanted/needed features:

2.0.x

  • bug 423281 Help updates.

    • Need to get things moving again and to contact those contributors who were working on this in the run up to SeaMonkey 2.0 to see if they are willing to continue.

  • bug 483282 Make sure normal SeaMonkey use doesn’t pay a price for having venkman installed .

    • Needs at least a core patch landing for 1.9.1.8 bug 364864 nsICategoryManager::deleteCategoryEntry does not persist outside of component registration.

    • No news.

  • bug 471346 Port GetDefaultFeedReader to SeaMonkey shell service. New patch needed .

    • Working on a new patch.

2.1

  • bug 460953 kill-rdf port .

    • Postponed until mcsmurf (or sgautherie) can resume work on it.

    • status/progress?

  • bug 436794 Enable Mac OS X system address book per default and add UI.

    • SM UI needed, unowned, helpwanted.

  • bug 410613 OpenSearch. helpwanted.

    • We need to check if OpenSearch can support all our existing functionality, for example the INTEPRETS section in Sherlock search plugins. Mnyromyr will check on that, and on how extensible the Firefox code is.

  • bug 449728 Drag tabs between windows.

    • unowned so far.

  • bug 498596 Places bookmarks.

    • unowned so far.

  • bug 480734 Satchel data editor (”Form Manager”).

    • unowned so far.

  • bug 477845 Build a standalone (Gecko 1.9.3) Composer.

    • kaze will look into that once KompoZer 0.8 is done.

    • bug 477840 Backport KompoZer to Composer (Depends on bug 477845).
    • kaze has done a ton of work for KompoZer out of a comm-central tree and wants to discuss that at FOSDEM. He says he has a patch for getting a pre-alpha of a standalone composer from comm-central, and is circulating that one via email right now, as he doesn’t have hg access yet, even though Callek has set up a repository for this work. He’ll probably demo something on FOSDEM.

  • bug 523274 Complete new default theme icon set.

    • A list of TODO icons is up in the bug

    • Still needs quite a bit of work.
    • bug 522023 is working on improving the browser globe in task icons, etc..

  • bug 526210 Update the icon set for the SeaMonkey Modern Theme.

    • unowned so far.

  • bug 521927 Make Search, Folder Location and Views widgets for MailNews customizable toolbars.

    • Has review+, but needs new patch.

We also should take a look at the other items on wanted-seamonkey2.1+

  • KaiRo posted on his blog about SeaMonkey 2.1 Planning.

  • Gecko roadmap is still unclear, there are two proposals on Talk:Firefox/Roadmap now, and discussions in m.d.planning.
  • We should go for smaller releases to ease upgrade paths for users. If we need to push back one or the other feature to the next smaller release, so be it, but we should stay closer to the Geckos Firefox is shipping as current.
  • Should the next alpha be based on 1.9.2 or 1.9.3? 1.9.2 is more stable, but that means we can’t include KompoZer work, as kaze probably needs core patches that can’t be backported to the stable tree.

Any other business?

  • We should have documentation on the web. If anyone can write up scripting to convert help docs to web pages, we would appreciate it.

    • We should have our help files in CC-by or something like that (ideally, matching SUMO).

    • If we would set up a SUMO clone, somebody would need to take care of it, i.e. we’d need a module owner for it. KaiRo is sure we could work out getting it set up by Mozilla on Mozilla hardware, but someone from our side would need to manage it. IanN and mcsmurf will help with setting this up.
    • mcsmurf to file a bug on setting up a SUMO instance for SeaMonkey.

Thanks for the reply.

There does not seem to be a "door" as such. There is a push-and-click, spring loaded slot into which the sd card is loaded. There does not seem to be any room for error there. You push it in until it clicks to load it and push it again and it comes out to unload it.

I've tried it a few times and it seems to be OK. Certainly I can access the SD card's contents from both the phone and USB cable. Only two apps are giving problems: one is Media Sync which disconnects at the start of the attempted sync and other is the HTC Sync which will not recognise the phone/card - maybe this is relevant?

- The

Blue Screen of Death

appears when Windows encounters a critical system error and can't continue.

- It shuts down your computer to prevent damage.

- The blue screen is displayed to inform you of this fact.

- If it's the first time you've gotten the blue screen, just restart your computer.

- If you get the blue screen again check to make sure all your device drivers are up-to-date.

- Microsoft states that most often, the Blue Screen of Death is caused by bad device drivers.

- You might also want to check any software you recently installed and make sure you have the latest version.

- If you continue to get the blue screen you may want to disconnect any new device to see if that is the cause.

Blue Screen Of Death is the most famous and most annoying error of Windows because the Operating System just ceases to work suddenly giving a blue screen and some technical error code. The most annoying thing is that you wanted to see what was the error message but the system automatically restarted. So you don’t have anything left in your hands. You can’t analyze what went wrong. Windows creates a dump file which is only for technical people.

Nirsoft has developed a utility called BlueScreenView which comes in very handy in this situation. It reads the dump files created while the system got a blue screen. You can enable or disable the creation of this dump by going to the following Location:

Right click My Computer –> Properties –> Advanced –> Startup and Recovery

BlueScreenView basically lets you see and analyze all the blue screen of death screens that your system encountered. It specified the faulting module so you can easily identify which driver or component was responsible for malfunctioning and causing this blue screen of death.

The upper pane of BlueScreenView displays the BSOD dumps that were created during blue screen of death screens. When we select one dump, the lower screen displays the details about that particular blue screen of death.

It gives the following crash information:

Crashes Information Columns (Upper Pane)

  • Dump File: The MiniDump filename that stores the crash data.

  • Crash Time: The created time of the MiniDump filename, which also matches to the date/time that the crash occurred.

  • Bug Check String: The crash error string. This error string is determined according to the Bug Check Code, and it’s also displayed in the blue screen window of Windows.

  • Bug Check Code: The bug check code, as displayed in the blue screen window.

  • Parameter 1/2/3/4: The 4 crash parameters that are also displayed in the blue screen of death.

  • Caused By Driver: The driver that probably caused this crash. BlueScreenView tries to locate the right driver or module that caused the blue screen by looking inside the crash stack. However, be aware that the driver detection mechanism is not 100% accurate, and you should also look in the lower pane, that display all drivers/modules found in the stack. These drivers/modules are marked in pink color.

  • Caused By Address: Similar to ‘Caused By Driver’ column, but also display the relative address of the crash.

  • File Description: The file description of the driver that probably caused this crash. This information is loaded from the version resource of the driver.

  • Product Name: The product name of the driver that probably caused this crash. This information is loaded from the version resource of the driver.

  • Company: The company name of the driver that probably caused this crash. This information is loaded from the version resource of the driver.

  • File Version: The file version of the driver that probably caused this crash. This information is loaded from the version resource of the driver.

Drivers Information Columns (Lower Pane)

  • Filename: The driver/module filename

  • Address In Stack: The memory address of this driver that was found in the stack.

  • From Address: First memory address of this driver.

  • To Address: Last memory address of this driver.

  • Size: Driver size in memory.

  • Time Stamp: Time stamp of this driver.

  • Time String: Time stamp of this driver, displayed in date/time format.

  • Product Name: Product name of this driver, loaded from the version resource of the driver.

  • File Description: File description of this driver, loaded from the version resource of the driver.

  • File Version: File version of this driver, loaded from the version resource of the driver.

  • Company: Company name of this driver, loaded from the version resource of the driver.

  • Full Path: Full path of the driver filename.

If you want to change the path where BlueScreenView looks by default, you can change it by going to options and change the location of the default search location. The default if C:WindowsMiniDump

New Computer: Mac! by ( I was ) Lost in Tokyo

As I think about the past, I remember many versions of Windows, some that were great, and others that left a lot to be desired. Most Windows operating systems have a few things that could make them better, and usually when Microsoft came out with the new version, it addressed many shortfalls. When Vista surfaced, I had to try it out. I installed Vista for business and my first impressions were mixed. I thought "this is a very pretty Operating system", and then in a few minutes I was thinking "Where is everything?"

It reminded me of the change from Win 3.1 to Win 95 except for in 95 everything seemed to have a place, and things were where you expected them to be. It didn't take long for you to figure out where things were, and in no time you were an expert.

For a long time Windows has been tailored for business and home. Windows 3.11, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP Pro were all business, with 95, 98, and XP Home being the home version.

When Windows 2000 surfaced, Microsoft tried to merge the two and they were mainly successful. Windows 2000 was surprisingly stable, except for those times where the occasional gamer would see the blue screen of death, because Microsoft seemed to forget to bring something from Windows 98 to make it work correctly.

Everything turned around when windows XP arrived. It was so easy to tell what Windows you needed. Home or Professional what else do you need? The XP versions were mostly identical except that Home could not connect to business-type computer networks. XP is also a very stable Operating system; just about any piece of software out there will run perfectly on XP.

Windows XP has a great mix of usability and prettiness. You can choose to have the "Blue XP Windows look", or the Standard windows grey. When service pack 2 came out, it added lots of security features and added some nice graphical things like little boxes that popped up in the corner every now and then.

XP could do pretty much anything you wanted it to do, and it would do it well. I don't know if I can say that for Windows Vista.

It seems like Microsoft was focusing to much on making Vista pretty, and missed out on a great opportunity to make a great OS even greater. Vista has some compatibility issues with some software, and if you don't have the latest greatest hardware, you were left feeling like you were waiting a long time for something that used to be really fast.

The PC I was using to test Vista, a Pentium 4 3.3 GHz IBM with 1 GB ram, told me that my vista experience was rated at a 1. This was quite new to me as well. After running some tests, Vista tells me that I may have some problems running it, and that I should think about a hardware upgrade. XP would seem to run great on just about any computer I installed it on. It even ran on my old Pentium 2 300 laptop, and it would run like a champ. It would even boot faster than the Windows 98 that was on it before.

After a few days of testing Vista, I just had to go back. To me, Windows XP is all that I need for now. I may change my mind in a year or so. I'm sure there will be some piece of software that will be written specifically for Vista that will force an upgrade. Until then, I know that I have a trusty operating system waiting for me.

Do not additionally forget to check opposite reviews upon the product; and to serve get honest views about a product, choosing the best registry cleaner mind be the great idea to examine some forums or blogs for genuine as well as real sentiments.

Easily Fix Runtime blunder - Microsoft Runtime blunder Solution

Frets on Fire by valentin.d

Did you mean 'show_progress()'? Where is it defined? The method is already public so you should be able to call it from another class. Your title says 'Function call! Error'. What error are you actually getting? Where are you getting the error? Provide a little bit more information and someone might be able to help you.

The computer is very prone to viruses and corrupted files. This is especially true for a computer whose operating system is not well protected.

That is why there have been a lot of times when the computer gets different errors.

A runtime error 3265, for instance, is a common nuisance to the computer system.

A broken link may cause this error.

But there are other factors that cause a runtime error 3265, as well.

A damaged file that is stored in the computer and a corrupted program can cause the registry to be damaged too.

And this, in turn, will cause the error 3265.

Can You Repair the Runtime Error 217 at a Minimal Expense?

If you try questioning the possibility of repairing the runtime error 217 at a minimal expense, you will be very glad. It is because the answer to your question will be affirmative. Yes, you can repair the runtime error 217 at a very small amount, with just a registry cleaner.

You do not even have to waste gas by driving to the computer store a few kilometers from your home. You may just sit in your home and search the Internet for the best registry cleaner available.

When you have found the one, purchase it using a credit card or an online account and it will be ready for download.

in what way To Solve blunder "Outlook Can't discovery PST" in MS Outlook

The Outlook Tower of Klucanina by Martin Mydlar

By Matthew Brown

Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Currency strategists are more in
sync than any time since the depths of the financial crisis,
increasing incentives to bet against the yen after the carry
trade lost money in December for the first time in 10 months.

Forecasts for the euro, yen and Swiss franc from 61
Bloomberg survey contributors are within 9 cents of the mean on
average, down from 11 cents a year ago. They haven’t been so
unified since Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.’s 2008 bankruptcy.
The predictions’ so-called standard deviation fell 16 percent
last quarter, the biggest drop in at least two years, after
jumping 48 percent in the three months after Lehman’s demise.

The growing consensus signals that foreign-exchange swings
will decline, luring investors to sell currencies from countries
with lower interest rates to buy higher-yielding ones. That may
weaken the yen and franc, and rein in the resurgent dollar.
Japan’s currency, which fell 6.6 percent since its 14-year high
of 84.83 per dollar on Nov. 27, may be the biggest loser as
Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama fights deflation and a recession.

Declining volatility and the rising U.S. currency means
“people are thinking about alternatives to the dollar as a
funding vehicle, and the yen is the obvious candidate,” said
Richard Franulovich, a strategist in New York at Westpac Banking
Corp., Australia’s second biggest bank. “Not only do they
already have low rates, the authorities are talking about a new
quantitative-easing program. There’s a big fiscal expansion
playing out under the new government, and the currency had a big
rally last year.”

Carry Returns

Westpac was one of 2009’s 10 best yen forecasters, data
compiled by Bloomberg show. Selling yen to buy Australian and
New Zealand dollars, Norwegian krone and Brazilian reais
returned 33 percent last year. Using the dollar earned 31
percent.

Funding the carry trade with the greenback lost money in
December for the first time since February as the U.S. currency
gained 4.8 percent against the euro amid growing confidence in
the U.S. economy and expectations that the Federal Reserve will
raise borrowing costs by June. Futures trading on Dec. 31
suggested a 62 percent chance the Fed would increase its
benchmark to at least 0.5 percent by mid-year from a range of
zero to 0.25 percent, up from 30 percent in November, Bloomberg
data show. The Bank of Japan’s target rate is 0.1 percent.

Buying and selling high- and low-yielding currencies to
take maximum advantage of global rate moves gained 19 percent
from February to November, the carry trade’s best nine months
since 2003, a Royal Bank of Scotland Plc index shows. The index
fell 0.9 percent in December.

‘U-Turn’

“The U-turn in the dollar led to a reverse carry trade in
December where people were selling the commodity currencies,”
said Theodore Chen, a quantitative analyst at RBS in London who
oversees the index.

Rapid exchange-rates swings tend to erode the carry trade’s
profits. Greater certainty about the direction of currencies
this year may help damp volatility, reducing the chances of a
repeat of December’s turnabout.

Risk returns have shifted in favor of the yen since late
last year, as measured by the Sharpe ratio, a gauge of gains
that takes volatility into account. In the year ending Nov. 30,
selling the dollar versus the currencies of Australia, New
Zealand, Norway and Brazil had a risk-premium ratio of 2.31,
compared with 1.24 for the yen. Since then, the ratios are 2.71
for the yen and less than zero for the dollar.

‘Faster Pace’

“Yen volatility can come down at a faster pace than dollar
or Swiss crosses, making it more useful as a funding source
going forward,” said Paul Mackel, the director of currency
strategy at HSBC Holdings Plc in London. “There’s going to be a
reflating of the yen carry trade.”

Analyst forecasts on the yen against the dollar varied from
the mean by 9 cents at the end of last week, compared with 10
cents at the end of 2008, Bloomberg data show. Dollar forecasts
against the euro also had a standard deviation of 9 cents last
week, down from 12 cents. For the Swiss franc, the figure fell
to 8 cents, from 11 cents. The Swiss National Bank’s key rate is
0.25 percent.

JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s index of volatility in the Group of
Seven currencies has fallen 12 percent this year, the most since
the two weeks beginning March 27, 2009.

Yen Forecasts

Carry-trade returns will benefit this year from the yen
weakening 7.2 percent to 98 per dollar from 90.93 today,
according to the median forecasts in Bloomberg surveys. The
franc is predicted to weaken 4.8 percent to 1.08 per dollar.

The dollar has the least bearish outlook -- a 1 percent
decline to $1.45 per euro, from $1.4362. Bets on gains for the
IntercontinentalExchange Inc.’s Dollar Index -- a gauge against
the euro, yen, pound, Canadian dollar, franc and Swedish krona -
- outnumber bearish wagers by 6 to 1, the most since March.

Even assuming stable currencies, buying 12-month bills in
reais, kronor, Australian and New Zealand dollars with Japanese
yen will return 5.2 percent more than holding equivalent-
maturity Japanese bills, compared with 5 percent for the same
trade with the dollars.

‘Disastrous Strategy’

Selling the yen against that basket of currencies lost
investors 34 percent in 2008 as volatility on the Japanese
currency against the dollar rose to 26 percent in December, the
most since at least 1991. Using the dollar as the funding
currency lost 17 percent.

“The carry trade works under conditions of low volatility,
which is why it was the most disastrous strategy in 2008,” said
Stuart Thomson, a Glasgow-based fund manager at Ignis Asset
Management, which oversees $100 billion.

Yen volatility is likely to decline as the Bank of Japan
keeps its benchmark rate on hold through next year as it battles
deflation, according to median forecast of 28 economists.

Japanese consumer prices are forecast to fall 1.3 percent
in 2009, by the same amount in 2010 and a further 0.3 percent in
2011, according to median economist forecasts in Bloomberg
surveys. The country’s economy will expand 1.4 percent in 2010,
after contracting 5.3 percent last year, the estimates show.

In Switzerland, inflation will hold at 0.6 percent through
2010, the Bloomberg survey shows. In the U.S., there is an 80
percent chance the Fed will raise its key rate to at least 0.5
percent by the end of the year, futures trading shows. The U.S.
economy will grow 2.7 percent this year, according to the median
of 57 economists’ forecasts compiled by Bloomberg.

Brazil, Norway

In Brazil, the central bank will increase its rate to 10.5
percent from 8.75 percent as growth accelerates to 4.75 percent
from 0.2 percent in 2009, according to Bloomberg surveys. Norway
will lift its rate to 3 percent from 1.75 percent, and
Australia’s will rise to 5 percent from 3.75, the polls show.

Japanese Finance Minister Naoto Kan said Jan. 14 there are
“still various policy measures that can be taken,” signaling
the Bank of Japan will take further action to aid the economy.
Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Pacific Investment
Management Co. analysts said this month the central bank may
increase the amount of money it adds into the economy through
purchases of government bonds to combat deflation.

The Democratic Party of Japan’s popularity has slid since
it came to power for the first time four months ago promising to
end 20 years of economic stagnation. Prime Minister Hatoyama’s
approval rating was at 56 percent this month, compared with 75
percent when he took office, the Yomiuri newspaper said Jan. 11,
without giving a margin of error.

Japanese Exporters

A weaker yen will benefit Japanese exporters, including
Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s largest manufacturer of
automobiles, and Sony Corp., which is forecasting a second
annual loss. Japan exports more than it imports, giving it a
current-account surplus every year since at least 1986, when
Bloomberg began collecting the data. Exports accounted for 14
percent of Japanese gross domestic product in the third quarter,
compared with 11 percent in the U.S.

The policies of the government and central bank are “a
signal to the market, saying ‘Hey, use the yen as a carry trade
because we’ll be back into the market printing lots of yen to
push the currency lower,” said Axel Merk, president of Merk
Investments LLC in Palo Alto, California, and manager of the
$477 million Merk Hard Currency Fund.

Some analysts predict the yen will rise against the dollar
as the U.S. currency suffers more from a global slowdown. Eisuke
Sakakibara, formerly Japan’s top currency official, said the
global recovery may slow in the second quarter, pushing Japan
into a double-dip recession and weakening the dollar to 85 yen
from 90.85 today.

“Should the U.S. experience a relatively weak rebound from
spring to summer there’s a high possibility the dollar will
drop,” said Sakakibara in a Jan. 15 interview in Tokyo.

Troubleshooting Common Outlook Error

Outlook Canyon by Viktor Igumnov

Zimbra Server Version: X-Mailer: Zimbra 6.0.3_GA_1915.UBUNTU8 (ZimbraWebClient - SAF3 (Linux)/6.0.3_GA_1915.UBUNTU8)

Clients: Outlook 2003 SP3, Windows XP Pro (fully patched).

Zimbra Outlook Connector Version: ZimbraOlkConnector-6.0.3_GA_1912_6.0.5737.3

On a fresh Outlook 2003 SP3 (and also with no prior profile), I install the Zimbra Outlook Connector version indicated above. The installation appears to run through normally. Once the install is complete, I am instructed by the installer to startup Outlook. I startup Outlook and immediately get the error as indicated in the attachment. The error is associated with LSLIB32.DLL (see attachment image).

I close that message, startup Outlook again, get asked to start in Safe Mode and I click No and then I continue into Outlook. Once in Outlook, the Zimbra connector seems to work ok as far as sending and receiving email, etc.

***So far I have installed the connector on the first 12 machines in our Windows 2003 network (XP clients) and ALL get this error message. In fact, even in my test VM environments (again XP), I get this error message. What is particularly interesting is the clients have Admin rights when I do the installs of the connector and this error happens for users on the network and also for test systems that are both on and off the network.***

Even though most things are working well, I am very concerned that everything could stop working in the future. I do not know how serious the LSLIB32.DLL file failure on installation is to Outlook and/or Zimbra. Can somebody explain that to me? Is my whole implementation going to fail and come crashing down in the near future because of this issue?

"Outlook.pst cannot be accessed - 0x80040116" error usually gets resolved using Inbox Repair tool (Scanpst.exe). Running only Inbox Repair tool doesn't fix Outlook problem though it shows that no errors were found. Reason being index of the .PST file is damaged. For resolving this issue, firstly run the "2 GB Truncation" tool, then run the Inbox Repair tool, and then open the repaired PST file.
Running 2 GB Truncation tool

"2 GB Truncation" tool known as Pst2gb.exe can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center. After download, you can see the other files with its exe, which are Msstdfmt.dll, Msvbvm60.dll, Pst2gb.exe, Readme.rtf, and Readme.txt.
Now follow the given steps:
1.Click Start, and then click Search.
2.Under What do you want to search for? click All files and folders.
3.In the All or part of the file name box, type *.pst.
4.In the Look in list, click Local Hard Drives (C:), and then click Search.
5.Note the path to the .pst file that you want to repair. By default, this file is named Outlook.pst.
6.Click Start, click Run, type pathpst2gb.exe -s, and then click OK.
7.Click Continue, and then click Browse.
8.Click the .pst file that you want to repair, and then click Open. By default, this file is named Outlook.pst.
9.Click Create, type a new unique file name for the .pst file such as Outlook-2 in the File name box, and then click Save.
10.In the Oversized PST Recovery Tool dialog box, click Start.
11.After you run the tool, click OK, and then click Close.

Running Inbox Repair tool to fix Outlook PST
1.Double-click scanpst.exe file.
2.Click Browse, and then open the folder that contains the new .PST file that you created by using the "2 GB Truncation" tool.
3.Click the new .PST file that you created and then Open.
4.In the Inbox Repair Tool dialog box, click Start.
5.When the file has been scanned, click Repair to repair the errors in the file.
6.When you receive the "Repair complete" message, click OK.
7.Restart the computer.

Now open the new created .PST file with Outlook. During the whole process there are chances of Outlook email data getting corrupt. But you can now fix Outlook PST easily with Outlook recovery software. This software recovers and restores emails and other email stuff from damaged Outlook PST files.

Error 0×80040154 isn’t as obscure or as difficult to repair as its name might suggest.  Usually, this error signifies one of two problems.

Error 0×80040154

Sometimes, this just represents a problem that your computer may have connecting to Microsoft Outlook Express.  In such a case, it will probably show up as a send and receive error.

One of the most frustrating things about error 0×80040154 in relation to Outlook is its lack of documentation by Microsoft.  Its information about this error pertains almost entirely to other applications.

Fortunately, for you and other users with this same problem, it is relatively easy to fix.  Running a “Detect and Repair” on Outlook will often fix the problem.  If it doesn’t, go ahead and reinstall Microsoft Outlook.  This will take care of the situation nine times out of ten.

The “0×80040154 (Class Not Registered)” Error

This can happen when you install an ATL server for use with Visual Studio.  It could be that this error pops up after an update for Visual Studio.

If you use Visual Studio 6.0, make sure your computer uses the runtime ATL.dll for this process, instead of the later-edition Visual Studio .NET version.

If you’re not sure how to do this, it’s best to find a tool that can help.  If you attempt to change this on your own and switch the wrong files, you may permanently damage your Visual Studio and/or your Windows operating system.

Repair 0×80040154 and the Other Problems it May Have Caused

One problem with this and any other computer error is that without the right kind of computer maintenance, the error’s repercussions may affect your windows operating system long after you have fixed the problem.

It is very possible this error has altered the Windows registry–and not for the better.  Since the registry makes note of all your files’ and programs’ interrelationships and uses them for future reference, an error today can keep Microsoft Windows in error for many months to come.  Repair Error 0×80040154 with a free registry scan.

as to perform doubt your mechanism keeps frozen awake

Windows 7 beta build 7048 by Taller Hikari

Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy," it says. "Enter to return to Windows or press Control-Alt-Delete to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications."

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses Microsoft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1 Hardware conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Often if a device has a problem a yellow '!' appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as 'IRQ holder for PCI steering'. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com. If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Microsoft , the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer's display.

Microsoft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to 'yes' to allow Windows to do this.).

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).

Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.

These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.

If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).

Look up your video card's manufacturer on the internet and search for the most recent drivers for it.

6 Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.

A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file.

DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your antivirus software manufacturer.

7 Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.

Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer's performance. If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds.

Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer's default settings and you may be able to carry on.

8 Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.

The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don't do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from www.jv16.org

Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message "Starting Windows" press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.

Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn't work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.

9 Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.

One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the CPU. Specialist cooling fans/heatsinks are available from www.computernerd.com or www.coolit.com

CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should also be more stable.

10 Power supply problems

With all the new construction going on around the country the steady supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can crash a computer as easily as a power cut.

If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a uninterrupted power supply (UPS). This will give you a clean power supply when there is electricity, and it will give you a few minutes to perform a controlled shutdown in case of a power cut.

It is a good investment if your data are critical, because a power cut will cause any unsaved data to be lost.

Valuable Tips cutting-edge selecting the most appropriate between records office cleaners

Windows Vista (x4) + Office 2007 System (x4) by jeffwilcox

For most people it is really easy to have a lost Windows XP CD. In fact, most of those people who have a lost Windows XP CD are the same people who search for free Windows Vista and free Windows XP. What they find is not always what they expect. In most cases, they will find a free Windows Vista or a free Windows XP, but it will not be the same one that paying customers will receive.

As a far as a free Windows XP goes, most of the people who have a lost Windows XP CD will find themselves using Windows XP Black Edition or Windows XP Ultimate Edition. Both Windows XP Black Edition and Windows XP Ultimate edition will allow the users to do everything that they could've done on a normal version of Windows XP, but their security is usually compromised. Because there are so many people with a lost Windows XP CD that end up using Windows XP Black edition or Windows XP Ultimate edition, most of the people using these free Windows XP versions will not know that their security has been compromised. On the other hand, there will be many people who find that credit cards that they have used on Windows XP Black edition and Windows XP Ultimate edition will have extra charges on theme. Even with the best security, it seems that there is no stop to it when you are using a free Windows XP or Free Windows Vista operating system. This usually happens because programmers have installed their own programs that are embedded into the heart of the installation process for free Windows XP and free Windows Vista CD installations. That means that even if it is spyware, it can be considered a critical system's process in a free Windows Vista or free Windows XP operating system. This is more than enough reason to stay away from Windows XP Ultimate or Windows XP Black edition, but many people insist on trying it out for more than they should just because of a lost Windows XP CD. If you are going to try it out because of a lost Windows XP CD then you should remember not to use your credit card information while you are on Windows XP Black edition or Windows XP Ultimate edition. These free Windows XP and free Windows Vista editions look awesome, but that is only to lure you into a trap.

Introduction:

Foreign languages, now known as second languages (L2), world languages, and languages other than English (LOTE), are a continuously evolving area of education. As student characteristics change over the years, techniques must also adapt to fit the needs of today’s students. One approach being used is the Meaningful and Motivating strategy, nicknamed the “M & M” approach. This approach is successful because of the components of brain-based learning, and the idea of a quality classroom. Sometimes integrated with the M & M approach are the areas of multiple intelligences, total physical response storytelling, and the introduction of technology into the LOTE classroom.

The M & M approach is broken down into five key elements to ensure teachers plan meaningful lessons to keep students motivated to learn. First, students are actively involved and have fun, and this is achieved by implementing activities which are hands-on and are meaningful to the learner (Sherwood, 1). Secondly, there is an emphasis on quality, which is accomplished by creating a syllabus with a theme and allowing student choice and responsibility (Sherwood, 1). Using this strategy, students learn other concepts while they are leaning the language, including skills for living, journaling and portfolio creation (Sherwood, 1). Students are also encouraged to realize there is not one BEST way to learn, and that everyone is capable of learning (Sherwood, 1). Finally, the M & M approach is characterized by thinking skills as an integral part of every lesson, which is best accomplished by inductive lessons (Sherwood, 1). In a personal interview, Candace Sherwood, nationally renowned speaker and LOTE presenter, explained the usefulness of the M & M approach.

“Teaching students things we learn in methods classes is key. They need to know about multiple intelligences. It’s not enough for us to plan diverse lessons. They need to be aware of where their strengths and weaknesses are, as well as to appreciate the same amongst their peers.”

The M & M approach works because of two key theory components: brain-based learning and the idea of a quality classroom. Brain-based learning, formulated by Regate and Geoffrey Caine, involves a foundation of twelve facts, but these can be combined into six focused ideas:

1) The brain is a parallel processor, which deals with “thoughts, emotions, imagination and predispositions that operate concurrently and interactively as the entire system interacts and exchanges information in the environment” (Caine).

2) Learning engages a student’s entire physiology. The implications of this fact for educators is the realization that everything that affects students’ physiological functioning affects their capacity to learn, including stress management, nutrition and amount of sleep (Principles).

3) The search of meaning is innate. This means that the “learning environment needs to provide stability and familiarity… and provision must be made for students to satisfy their curiosity and hunger for novelty, discovery and challenge” (Principles).

4) Emotions are critical to patterning, which refers to the “meaningful organization and categorization of information” (Caine). “The brain is designed to perceive and generate patterns, and it resists having meaningless patterns imposed on it,” thus teachers are encouraged to use thematic teaching, integrating of the curriculum, and life-relevant approaches to learning (Caine, Principles). The way students pattern things are influenced by emotions and “mind sets based on expectancy, personal biases and prejudices, degree of self-esteem, and the need for social interaction,” and emotions and thoughts cannot be separated (Caine).

5) There are two types of memory: spatial and rote learning. Students have a “spatial/autobiographical memory that does not need rehearsal and allows for instant recall” (Caines). This memory is “always engaged,” yet the two ways of organizing memory are stored differently (Caines). By ignoring the personal world of the learner, “educators actually inhibit the effective functioning of the brain” (Principles).

6) The brain understands and remembers best if facts/skills are embedded in natural spatial memory, which means giving students real-life events and examples. Just as our native language is learned through “multiple interactive experiences with vocabulary and grammar,” it is shaped both by “internal processes and by social interaction” (Caines). Keeping this in mind, teachers need to use a great deal of real-life activities, including “classroom demonstrations, projects, field trips, visual imagery, stories, metaphors, drama, and interaction of different subjects” (Principles).

Combined with the foundations of brain-based learning to make the M & M approach a success is William Glasser’s idea of a quality school teacher and quality classroom. A quality school is achieved by “using lead-management rather than boss-management principles,” and this requires six phases, with the first being the most crucial (Glasser). The first stage occurs when “relationships are based upon trust and respect, and all discipline problems, not incidents, have been eliminated” (Glasser). This quality school is made up of “quality school teachers” and “quality classrooms,” which are also defined by Glasser. In a quality classroom:

1) There is a warm, supportive classroom environment.

2) Students should be asked to do useful work.

3) Students are always asked to do the best they can do.

4) Students are asked to evaluate their own work and improve it.

5) Quality work always feels good.

6) Quality work is never destructive.

Together, Glasser’s ideas of a quality classroom and Caines and Caines’ belief in brain-based learning make the Motivated and Meaningful approach to LOTE classrooms a success.

A different approach to teaching in a LOTE classroom is using Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences as a base. With a core of seven distinct areas of intelligence, Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences has been incorporated into classrooms around the world since its publication in 1983. Gardner defined intelligence as “the capacity to solve problems or to fashion products that are valued in one of more cultural setting” (Gardner & Hatch, 8). His new outlook differed substantially from the traditional view, which focuses on two intelligences, verbal and computational. In the book Frames of Mind, Gardner’s seven intelligences are:

1) Logical-Mathematical: the ability to detect patterns, reason deductively and think logically, usually associated with scientific and mathematical thinking.

2) Linguistic: having a mastery of language, includes the ability to effectively manipulate language to express oneself rhetorically or poetically, allows one to use language as a means to remember information.

3) Spatial: the ability to manipulate and create mental images in order to solve problems, not limited to visual domains.

4) Musical: the capacity to recognize and compose musical pitches, tones and rhythms.

5) Bodily-Kinesthetic: the ability to use one’s mental abilities to coordinate one’s own bodily movements, allows mental and physical activity to be related.

6) Interpersonal: the ability to understand the feelings and intentions of others.

7) Intrapersonal: the ability to understand one’s own feelings and motivations. (Gardner; Sherwood, 43 – 44).

Newly added to Gardner’s intelligences are naturalistic and existential intelligences. In 1996, Gardner updated his theory published in Frames of Mind and explained naturalistic intelligence as the ability to recognize plants, animals and other parts of natural environment such as rocks, trees, flowers and clouds (Checkley, 52). Students with a strong naturalistic intelligence may like doing activities related to nature, such as fishing, hiking and/or camping. Students using existential intelligence will like and enjoy thinking and questioning, and will be curious about life, death, and ultimate realities. Gardner defines this intelligence as to “exhibit the proclivity to pose and ponder questions about life, death and ultimate realities,” and students using this intelligence will show curiosity about what the earth was like years ago, if there is life on another planet, where living things go after they die, and if there are ghosts or spirits (Reframed, 60 - 64).

Many teachers use the idea of multiple intelligences when planning lessons, keeping in mind the varying ways their students learn best. Examples of combining the idea of multiple intelligences with the M & M approach are easy to come by, as element four specifically deals with Gardner’s theory. Students understand that there is not one BEST way to learn can be easily achieved by applying multiple intelligences to one’s curriculum. Linguistic learners master concepts best using teaching strategies like discussions, word games, storytelling, and journals; while logical-mathematical learners understand easiest through puzzles, problem solving, and activities involving grammar and syntax (Sherwood, 44). Visual presentations and art activities are effective tools to use with visual-spatial learners, with drama, hands-on learning and physical movement for bodily-kinesthetic learners (Sherwood, 44). Using songs, rhythms, and dialects will help musical learners (Sherwood, 44). Interpersonal learners understand best through cooperative learning, projects, games and small group activities, while intrapersonal learners flourish with individualized instruction, journals and independent projects (Sherwood, 44). Although it may seem overwhelming and nearly impossible to design each lesson to meet the demands of Gardner’s theory, allowing student choice helps to make the theory a reality. For example, after students finish learning about the grammar concept of subjunctive/subjuntivo, which does not occur in English, assigning students to complete one of five possible tasks (each corresponding to differing intelligences), allows for authentic assessment in the way a student learns best.

Opponents in the educational field and in varying disciplines do not encourage using multiple intelligences mainly due to reasons associated with assessment (Grabowski). Some believe they are not useful and give students a false sense of security and success, meaning that when a student leaves the educational setting s/he will not be able to sing a song at work instead of writing a report. Gardner combats this thinking by explaining that those with strong linguistic intelligence will seek out careers that allow them to thrive, including poets (Seven Steps). Scientists usually have strong logicial-mathematical intelligence, composers have increased musical intelligence, airplane pilots and sculptors use spatial intelligence, and athletes and dancers have increased bodily kinesthetic intelligence (Seven Steps). Salesmen and teachers are known for having strong interpersonal intelligence, yet many still disagree with the use of Gardner’s theory past middle school. While Gardner’s multiple intelligences are widely used in elementary classrooms, as students age, thus the emphasis reverts back to verbal and computational.

R1: If students are aware of Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, are they more
successful in achieving academic goals?

R2: Can Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences be incorporated successfully into the
M & M approach at all grade levels?

A new area of focus in the LOTE classroom has been total physical response storytelling, commonly known as TPRS or TPR Storytelling. TPRS if a methodology created by Blaine Ray of California, and it was specifically designed for second language education. Based upon the work of Stephen Krasher and James Asher, this technique uses TPR as its basic concept, but expands it in order to “create a more meaningful and contextualized environment for learning a foreign language”(Sherwood, 52). There are two critical concepts to understand about TPRS: learning (understanding about the language) and acquisition (an unconscious process with a focus on the meaning) (Sherwood, 52). One downfall of this strategy is that students may feel they have not learned anything since the learner is “picking up the language” in a very non-traditional way (Sherwood, 52). According to Blaine Ray, three things that don’t work in acquisition are forced speech beyond the acquisition level (listening and merely repeating), error correction, and the study of grammar rules. Many experienced teachers are not willing to try this strategy because of the lack of grammar instruction, which many believe is the bedrock of learning a second language. The underlying principle of TPRS is acquisition of the target language (Sherwood, 52). According to Ray, this communicative strategy is made up of five key elements:

1) Language must be taught in context.

2) Language must be comprehensible.

3) Learning has an element of realism.

4) Class should be taught so it is interesting.

5) Students need to learn a foreign language for their long-term memory, not just memorize for tests.

In order to better understand what TPRS is all about, it is a necessity to review the basic concepts, as well as offer illustrative examples for incorporating this technique into the classroom. The first step to using TPRS is to select a vocabulary list, then the teacher gestures each word to the class. The students repeat the word with the gesture, using “novel TPR commands” (Sherwood, 53). The instructor then tells a story using the vocabulary words, and when each word comes up the teacher gestures and the students do as well. After the story is completed, personal questions and answers (P.Q.A.) are discussed, and personalized mini-situations (P.M.S.) take place for a period of one to four days, with new vocabulary being introduced and acted out as necessary (Sherwood). A mini-story takes place for about one week, with students incorporating old and current vocabulary, and the final phase of TPRS occurs when a chapter story takes place after about seven weeks of mini stories (Ray).

Personalized mini-situations are a key element in using TPRS. According to Ray, these are created by first telling a story in the target language using a few students as actors. The teacher will use only a short list of vocabulary – usually only one to four words – that the students need to learn. Then the teacher then retells the story and asks questions of the class, which are usually simply yes/no questions but, like the story, are in the target language. Individual students retell the story again as the teacher acts it out; this is usually done by a high level L2 student, which uses the strategy of differentiated instruction. The next phase is to have many students help tell the story together, allowing each only fifteen seconds to tell as much of the story as possible then moving on to another student who continues the story. If further practice is needed, Ray suggests groups of students draw the events of the story. The following day the process continues, as the P.M.S. is repeated to ensure all students understood it, and reteaching is done as necessary. Assessment is done through the teacher making mistakes on purpose for the students to correct.

In order to implement TPRS and have the maximum impact possible, Ray offers many suggestions. Teachers should personalize words and put them in context, for example to teach oso, the Spanish word for bear, an instructor could relate it to the school’s mascot. Those certified by Ray in TPRS methodology always “eliminate the normal and exaggerate!” (Sherwood, 53). Using proper names of celebrities, such as Brad Pitt is another tactic used to help students remember stories, and therefore vocabulary (Ray). A teacher should always try to make students look good in the situation, and should act like what is being said is real, even if it is false information (Sherwood, 53). Remembering to use specific situations instead of general, and using appropriate level words during the entire story, as ALL words in the L2 must be comprehensible (Sherwood). Finally, teachers should be sure to prepare student actors ahead of time by whispering what they should do, and also use hand signals to guide students to act in a certain way. Incorporating these strategies into a TPRS classroom is crucial for its success.

Opponents of TPRS believe not enough vocabulary is covered, with only one-hundred specific words being focused on in an average seven-week chapter story unit. Many also believe that older students may not benefit as much, due to the similarities of TPRS to elementary school same-language vocabulary acquisition (Triplett). Students may even be insulted by the technique if not familiar with the foundation of TPRS (Triplett). Some educators are not convinced of its effectiveness, as few classrooms with a state assessment rely solely on TPRS as a methodology (Triplett). However, as the desire to learn more about TPRS increases, Blaine Ray continues to offer workshops and seminars around the world to faculty of all language backgrounds and skill levels. Currently TPRS is used most often in elementary LOTE classrooms, yet it is beginning to gain popularity with middle and secondary L2 educators.

R3: Is TPRS a successful strategy for 7 – 12 language acquisition in LOTE
classrooms?

R4: Do students respond positively to TPRS teaching strategies in 7 – 12 LOTE
classrooms?

Including technology is the classroom is not a new phenomenon, and many teachers use basic technological devices on a daily basis. Televisions, VCRs, tape recorders and stereos, as well as overheads are common place in many schools today. Unfortunately, LOTE classrooms are often times at the bottom of the list for departmental funding (Grabowski). Technology such as listening centers, projectors, new computer software and interactive DVDs are beginning to be found in L2 classrooms across the country. In order to justify funding for LOTE classrooms, it is important to determine the usefulness of technology specifically to L2 acquisition.

R5: Does technology positively affect student participation and achievement in
LOTE classrooms?

It is the hope that the data collected from this study will help to guide the future of L2 methodology instruction. By explaining why teachers choose the activities they do, what works best for student participation and academic achievement, in an effort to change the future of LOTE education. In order to gain acceptance as more than a special area subject, this study seeks to substantiate effective teaching techniques, as well as decipher ways to integrate many newly emerging teaching techniques into different levels of LOTE education.

Procedures:

In order to answer the research questions, I propose an ethnographic study of twelve LOTE teachers. These would be divided into three groups with five teachers in each.

Group A: Four (4) New York State certified elementary school LOTE teachers
currently teaching LOTE full-time with students from grades K – 4.

Group B: Four (4) New York State certified middle school LOTE teachers
currently teaching LOTE full-time with students from grades 5 – 8.

Group C: Four (4) New York State certified high school LOTE teachers currently
teaching LOTE full-time with students from grades 9 – 12.

All teachers that participate must have tenure with at least three years in current position/grade level assignment, and must be certified in area and specific grade levels being taught. They will all be selected from NYS public schools, as the 8th grade NYS Proficiency Exam and the 11th grade NYS Regents Exam will be used as part of an evaluative tool. Five districts will be chosen to help with the study, with one teacher from each group participating. This limits the schools dramatically, as many districts do not have elementary LOTE programs, yet it is important to select schools that have a commitment to L2 education for the study to be as successful as possible. Teachers will nominate their schools with the use of FLTeach, a worldwide LOTE education LISTSERV based at SUNY Cortland with the help of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (cortland.edu).

I will pose as a college student doing my pre-student teaching (which means I would be there in order to complete twenty hours of observations in each grade level) in each of the high school classrooms. It is not uncommon for pre-student teachers and student teachers to have forms for the teacher to fill out including teaching methodologies used. The reason pre-student teaching has been chosen is because college students engaged in pre-student teaching are not required at any time to plan lessons or instruct the classroom, thus allowing the observer role to remain intact. Many students are also already familiar with the procedures of a student teacher, and during these times teachers usually perform at their peak, in an attempt to pass their wisdom on to the teacher-to-be, thus students would not question the techniques used by the teacher. The teachers being observed would be aware that I was gathering information to become a better teacher.

As I am certified in 7 – 12 Spanish in accordance with the standards that will change February 1, 2004, one observer specialized in grades 5 – 8 as well as a K-12 certified LOTE instructor will be necessary to observe groups A and B respectfully. The reason a K – 12 certified teacher is a requirement to work with group A is due to the lack of specific K – 4 NYS special area certification. Other researchers will follow the same procedure, posing as pre-student teachers in each of the selected classrooms.

Researchers will keep detailed notes, and will ask the teachers for clarification during planning time. This is essential everyday, as the reason behind choosing specific activities must accompany data. Students response and participation must be documented, as well as specific comments made during activities/lessons. Teachers will not be surprised at the informal questioning, as pre-student teachers must gather information on a wide variety of teaching strategies and foundations while in methods classes.

Data Analysis:

Data will be analyzed by all three observers separately. Once reports have been written by all three observers dealing with the research questions and data collected, discussions can begin surrounding implications of the research findings. Round-table conversations will take place over a series of days, with follow-up questionnaires being designed and mailed and/or phone or in-person interviews conducted with participating teachers as necessary for clarification of data/research findings. Research could be used to help design a new L2 methodology textbook.
